Green Living

Recycling Day

Twice a year, in the spring and the fall, the city I live in offers one day for free hazardous material recycling for all their residents.  They set up a drop location and you load up your car with old household chemicals, paint and electronics.  All you need is identification to prove you live in the city and they do the rest.

Years ago my daughters got me involved in recycling….it was something that had been talked about but I just did a bit here and there.   My oldest daughter has always been an environmentalist….even at quite a young age.  She would get upset when she saw construction companies clearing trees or land for yet another shopping area and she was a strong believer in recycling once she learned about it.  She was adamant we recycle so I began to do my part with more gusto.  It is now second nature to me.

I had some old paint that needed to be disposed of for quite some time but I was always missing the hazardous material recycling day.  This year, I made it a point to go.  Along with my old paint, I also had an old scanner that needed to be disposed of.  I got up bright and early this morning and loaded up the car.  I wondered on the way over if there would be many people there…..

I got my answer when I turned on the street and the line was stopped….we waited here for about ten minutes then the line began to move…slowly but surely…

We went up a fairly long road….around a circle….back down the road about half way…..turn right and finally I could see the end of the line across a field from where I was sitting.

It took me longer than I anticipated….about 40 minutes….but it did make me feel pretty good to see so many people participating so I would say it was worth the wait.
